A guy from Toronto was the first man to get an eyeball tattoo. Yeah, you read that right, an eyeball tattoo. The end result was a blue eye, and it took 40 injections of blue ink to achieve that. Funny enough, I’ve been watching Dune these last few days and the first thing that popped in my head was "Fremen"
This is what Paul said about it:
I really have to emphasize again that the procedure was extensively researched and done by people who were aware of the risks and possible complications and that it should not be casually attempted. Now that this experiment has been started, please wait for us to either heal or go blind before trying it.
More photos after the jump and they’re just as disgusting.

Why oh why risk permanent eye damage or blindness…?
To each his own, but I hope my tax dollars will not support the fool when he is blinded.
Shannon Larratt
http://modblog.bmezine.com/2007/07/04/the-spice-begins-to-flow/
Your tax dollars will because you live in a socialist country, fag.
Three things could happen–he’ll go blind from the dye. Someone thinking him possessed by the devil, will take a stick and gouge out his eyes. Or he’ll get a raging infection from those filthy fingernails, and his eyeballs will shrivel up and fall out of his head. Either way–what an idiot.
Man, people are dumb.
Hope his eye pops out. Then he could get a fake eye of any colour he would want…
over 40 injections to get the whole eye blue? what was the point? no design? u guys sure are pros…
I’m a religious reader of the ModBlog, where this story originated from. There have been a few updates since this first session, but not many. Several possible methods were experimented with from the traditional tattoo method to direct injection as is pictured. Overall, direct injection yielded the best results. This ink diffused a little bit over time and isn’t quite as bright blue as it initially is, but its still very noticeable.
And also, he has experienced no vision problems, discomfort, or infection. He plans to continue the process in hopes of achieving a totally blue eyeball eventually.
So those of you wishing for blindness can just shove it, because it isn’t going to happen.
And oh yeah, these guys are pros. They are some of the most respected and well known members of the modification community around the world.
And apparently you aren’t familiar with the inspiration for this. You need to check out Dune.
Well if something goes south…..I’m sure it can’t be due to those disgusting fingernails. Geeeez.
Do you see blue tint in the visual field?
All of you saying that he is stupid for doing this obviously haven’t checked out the MODBLOG of Shannon Larratt. The procedure was completely safe and, at over 72 hours after, his eye is completely healthy. And don’t you fret over your precious tax dollars going to his recovery, given somehow he does go blind though its impossible…Shannon is a resident of Canada, where Health Care is FREE. Granted its free because of taxes, but its free to EVERYBODY…tax payer or not. And Shannon pays his taxes.
I could care less what the guy does, but you must admit those fingernails are disgusting.
yeah it prolly wasnt the brightest idea, but still, give the guy some cred, thats pretty cool. and hes from toronto woot!
How stupid can one become!!
PLEASE PEOPLE: PLEASE READ THE ARTICLE INSTEAD OF LOOKING AT THE PICTURES AND CRITICIZING! You are no better than anyone, remember that.
if i were to have this done i think I’d insist that the person doing it CLEAN THEIR DAMN FINGERNAILS…. but I’m a stickler.
There’s no such phrase as “could care less”, that makes no sense; it’s “couldN’T care less”.
I can’t understand why anyone would go to these extremes, takes these risks for something so trivial - why not just get contacts?
For what it’s worth , the Doc is wearing gloves and the filthy nails are the patients I’m sure. Having your eye blue is a call for attention as I see it , just as folks who get tats or pierce their bodies in crazy places! In fact a ring in the ol nose is as dirty and disgusting as it gets , but they do get the required attention they seek. Immature …
For those of you who are wondering why someone would do this to themselves, I can only say that if you have to ask, you’ll never know.
Check out the disgustingly filthy, incredibly unhygienic fingernails! If this guy didn’t get an infection from that filth, he must be superhuman.
WOW… He will never get a job in a conservative industry!
I recon he’ll have to keep selling dope?
What is everybody’s deal with the fingernail thing? So Shannon’s personal hygiene isn’t up to par with what your PERSONAL hygiene is…Two words for all of you: GROW UP.
RE: Scott Williams: Shannon HAS a job. He is a writer for bmezine.com …check it out, you may learn a thing or two you didn’t before.
Eyeball tattooing has been used for a long time to help with certain eye problems to help correct them. He might be the first to get it done for cosmetic purposes but he is not the first one to get his eye tattooed.
he is totally jerk, he going to be blind sooner or later.
Pardon me, people, but this is Shannon Laratt, who runs ModBlog and BmeZine.com. He is his own person and he is doing these things, knowing what is at stake. He promotes ACCEPTING people and not using hateful words in your speech like “fag.” He’s living his own life and you should respect that, or at least live and let live.
who the hell thought it was a good idea to stick their disgusting fingers up in that guys eye? am I the only one that noticed all the dirt under those nails..?
Has anybody looked closely at the fourth pic, who ever’s fingers those really needs to practice some hygine, especially when penetrating a person’s eye with a needle. Geeze that gross.
WOW. You’re a fucking RETARD!
if you’re that desperate to start a new trend, try WEARING FUCKING GLOVES when you put your dirty ass hands near any type of procedure that involves dermal penetration.
that dude is a fuckin moron. If i saw some dude walking around with fuckin fluro blue eyes i’d call stan lee and get him to recall his comic characters to fight that shit fuck u man
Well I do hope he doesn’t go blind. I’m sure it seems a lot more risky than it is, otherwise it probably wouldn’t happen.
Final point: If that stays blue that guy is going to be pretty bad ass.
Also, I’m assuming those are his own fingers. (Really, really hoping anyway.)
Wow ~ whose nasty fingernails are next to this guy’s (hopefully) sterile injection area? Wow… good luck buddy you’ll friggin need it. Hope you’re independently wealthy.
It’s actually a pretty cool idea for the more extreme personality. Why not? People have been experimenting with their anatomy for eons. I’m surprised people wish him ill will when they could just wish him the best and enjoy(?) witnessing the experiment. That’s what I’m about, anyway.
Well, Im not sure about the blue eye..or the dirty fingernails for that matter..but is that a tan line on his forehead?? just wondering.
umm actually if u research this type of tattooing, its been around before normal tattooing
Seriously. Is a statement of uniqueness really worth that much pain>? A BLUE EYE TATTOO? GEEZ. Hey, how many fingers am I holding up?
There wasa tatoo artist in Milwaukee, WI, USA that did eyeball tatoos in the 50’s. He would tatoo iris on damaged eyes for eye surgeons.
All you people with negative comments are just jealous because now HE controls the spice…
Well personally i think its quite awesome!
I thats what he wants then so be it, if he goes blindthen at least hel have a well good looking eye =D
Well there’s alot of ignorant people here.
People have been doing this for a long time.
He will not get an infection; blindness, or another disability. The eyes are very good at cleaning gunk away, so you have a higher chance of an infection by getting your hand cut. The needle is very sterile, and the paint is nontoxic (if anything, it’s probably more dangerous to the skin than the eyes)
He will not have a ‘blue pigment in his vision’ (light passes through the black part of your eye, not the white part)
1. This is very cool. i mean, who wants stock-standard whites. If this goes popular, I can see all the Goths getting them made black. But I agree that somebody that is planning on working in industry, probably shouldn’t get it done. But if you work for/in a body modification business, or in a place where aesthetics are very minimal then right on.
Also, people, 1. Read the comments before commenting yourself, makes you look stupider than you already are. 2. Use that blob of neurons in your heads, do you honestly believe than any sane person would do this without understanding the risks. And that any sane doctor (assumed, I could be wrong) would do it without making sure that the patient knew the risks, and had signed various waivers.
cool!!! EVERYONES DIFFRENT!!! he’ll probably start a new blue look :]

Actually it’s not the “world’s first” eyeball tattoo.
Eyeball tattooing is one of the oldest forms of body mod.
It’s pretty safe really, since the eyes are kinda designed to cope with foreign bodies etc.
And it looks kickass!
I mean come on, you’d instantly notice a blue eye, and be like “wow!”
Even if you think it’s disgusting, it’ make you look.

that’s crazy shit.
i’ll stick with regular tattoos, but gotta give him props for having the balls to do something like that.
especially when there are morons out there like the ones posting comments about his fingernails and blindness and how tattoos are OBVIOUSLY only a cry for attention.
thumbs up, shannon.
awwwe man that is soooo F-ing GROSS!!!!
did it cause any damage on your eye?>
are you blind or anything?
sick bastard why would you do that …..people have nothing better 2 do he may not go blind but i sure am hoping he does to teach him some common sense that some thing should not done
if u all worrie about ur self. and half of u probley dosent pay taxes.its him not u.he likes blue balls lol
and u would have to be a low life to wish bad on someone cant say u never did anything wrong
you ARE a low life if you wish something bad on someone who you’ve never met,
i think thats awesome, for some reason i think the Nazis tried this… i could be wrong
I have to say I am not as horrified as I should be. I first saw eye ball tattooing on CSI where they were colouring the cornea blue. I thought it was really creepy-cool, and wondered if it was real. So… I did some research and came across the guys who did this.
Not much is explained here about them and this form of art, so here’s what I learned.
This guys are vetran tattoo artists who have done a lot of boby art.
They are not the first, this form of tattooing has exised for around 2000 years. There hasn’t yet been any documentation of people doing it on their white areas. Several tattoo artists exist who have preformed this to correct eye colour problems or create a fak “eye” for the blind.
I read in an article that a tattoo artist who does this for people with real problems say that it could be done on the white area, altough there was a risk of infection, and she didn’t do it on healthy eyes.
I guess its like people who do dare stunts, they shouldn’t do it, But to them its cool, they want the attention (not in a negative way), and their are adults and there is really not much you can do to stop them from taking the risk.
In fact the guys who did this said they did extensive research, and only tried a little bit at first to see how it worked. They clearly stated that others should not try this on their own, and to wait to seen if they (the guys colouring their eyes went blind, etc.) They also repored that they suffered no pain during the process and the healing was like a regular tattoo.
In Britian they did a report which stated there were places which did this (on the conrea) with regular inks instead of tattoo inks and have done it for 50-60 years with a good record.
What the blue-eye guy plans for the future is to colour the entire eye blue, so he has a creepy green-blue eye.
This form of art is mainly for the extreem, and as much as I admire it I admire my eyes more and I would never dreem of doing it.
I have read some negative comments on tattoos and piercings and yes in the West generally they represent the rebllious and sometimes have unsavory connections to crime. However, this isn’t true for all body art. In some cultures body art is a symbol of adulthood, or mourning. As far as piercings go I can’t say much about them except for the nose piercing, and ear piercing. In my culture when a women is getting married she get a nose piercing, and all girls are given ear pirecings right after birth. In fact in some parts of my country men have pirecings on both ears and wear earings (guy types). Different cultures = different norms.
Wow this has been one long comment, but to sum it up people shouldn’t be so harsh, but its true that dangerous things shouldn’t be encouraged. (I believe the tattoo artist had gloves on and took precautions however, they never should have let that dirty finger nail near the eye, that was dangerous. When doing something like this you must be extreemly finicky.
Just thought id let you know that after this his eye healed, and he can still see and it looks awesome look on http://www.checkoutmyink.com to see for yourselfs
that’s crazy shit. but give him props for having the balls to do something like that o_O
I say good on him he can do as he pleases, if some 1 wants to do something to there self they should have the right to do it and fuck any 1 who dont like it who cares what any 1 thinks, if he likes it and it what he wants go him, tattoos and things like this is what makes us all different who are we to comment and who gives a fuck about his finger nails geeze get a grip, I say go him and good luck hope u get the blue eye u want!!! Paul
oh man, i love how some people are taking his choice to do something to his own body as a personal attack on their sensibilities. none of the people who have commented are being forced to get their own eyes tattooed, chill out. it’s his body and he’s got a right to do what he pleases with it. he hasnt hurt anyone, except maybe himself (i cant imagine it was painless). it’s not like he got “I HATE -insert visible or religious minority here-” tattooed across his forehead and beats up little kids for their lunch money. get a grip people.
If it bothers you so much that he did what he has done, then why comment. He knows what he wanted to do and did it, and if you all are going to make a huge deal about it then obviously you need to take a step back and look at yourselves first.
And as for the fingernail comments,
it’s ridiculous, so the guy doesn’t have a fucking prim and proper manicure.. I think it’s probably the last thing on his mind especially if he’d had a needle injecting ink into his eyeball 40 times.
That is not some guy from Toronto, that is Shannon Larratt!
is hands are dirty..!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay, I am ALL for getting a tattoo.
I’m getting inked as soon as I find something that holds special meaning to me seeing as though it will forever be there.
However, WTF was this Torontonian thinking?! As an individual living in the outskirts of Toronto ie. Vaughan. If I ever was to see this dude-bud I’d verbally tear him a new ass hole. That’s not even close to being “cool” or “nice” body art. That’s just plain W-R-O-N-G! Its on par with disgusting!
OMG I actually nearlly spewed, did that not hurt like hell !? i hate putting contacts in but having a needle in my eye for vanity is surely moronic.
fair play to the guy tho, he has guts and I hope he was fine afterwards.. x
